Adept have been working with the charity Kidney Research UK for many years on various printed campaigns and were delighted to be asked to provide consultancy services and design their new website. A freelance front end developer had already been appointed to develop the site using the Blackbaud NetCommunity system, but the charity required Adept to provide specialist digital strategy and web design services.
As part of the initial engagement, Adept produced a functional specification for the new website based on a number of meetings and focus groups that we led. During this requirements gathering exercise, we were able to formulate an information architecture and set of functional requirements that balanced user needs, organisational requirements, and the functionality offered by the NetCommunity platform.
In order to engage with stakeholders throughout the design process, we created a set of wireframes to further explore and fine-tune the information architecture of the site, putting an appropriate focus on both the research and fundraising sides of the website. After presenting these to a core team at the charity, feedback was sought from a wider group of users. Once wireframes were agreed, Adept produced two design concepts for the overall look and feel of the website. One of these was selected, which was rolled out to further pages. Finally, design visuals were created for a number of pages on a mobile device to be used to implement the responsive stylesheets. Design assets along with a web style guide were delivered to the freelance developer to complete the project.
Three main areas were identified as key to the charity on the website, Health Information, Research and Supporters/Donations. A streamlined navigation was created that made it easy for the various different audiences to find the content that they needed. The home page was created to act as a portal into these sections of the site with a large feature area to showcase new content and prominent links to research, donation and fundraising pages.
Obtaining more donations was an important part of the new website development. A donation call to action was featured prominently on the homepage, breaking down what different amounts would do to help. The story telling helped create a stronger connection with the audience and should lead to an increase in donations.
The website utilises a wide range of interactive functionality such as a news system, donation and event registration forms, social media integration and downloads. The clean and bright modern design coupled with large and dynamic imagery create an engaging website helping and supporting many thousands of people.
